Middle school students dodge cancer

November 17, 2016 By Team Up 4 Community

Middle school students banded together for Elwood Middle School’s eighth annual Dodge Cancer event on Nov. 9. Grades six through eight participated in a charity dodgeball tournament to raise money for community members impacted by cancer. The event raised $6,500, which will be delivered to struggling families with the disease.
More than 300 students participated in the tournament and created dodgeball teams with their fellow classmates. The teams dressed the part with matching uniforms. Before the tournament began, the school’s kickline team performed a spirited routine to get the crowd on their feet. Sixth-graders went into the auxiliary gym to start the competiton, while seventh and eighth-graders competed in the main gymnasium.
Many faculty members, parents and Elwood-John H. Glenn High School students volunteered their time to make the event a success. Family members and administrators, including Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kenneth Bossert, also came out to support the cause.
“It is very satisfying to be part of an experience that brings so many people together for such a fantastic cause,” said Honor Society President Jack Schelin. “Being part of something that is bigger than yourself is very humbling. I will miss being a participant in this event, but look forward to lending a helping hand next year.”

Helping others one lap at a time

November 16, 2016 By Team Up 4 Community

Parkway Elementary School in the East Meadow School District held its second annual Turkey Trot fundraiser on Nov. 10 to help families have a bountiful Thanksgiving.
Since September, students in kindergarten through fifth grade trained for the event by running laps outdoors during their gym classes to improve their running times. In honor of this year’s race, students were encouraged to bring in canned goods and nonperishable items to assist Island Harvest in providing families on Long Island with a delicious Thanksgiving meal.
On the day of the fundraiser, students in grades 3-5 ran 12 minutes around the building, while those in K-2 completed the run in the gymnasium. Before they started the run, the students dropped off their donations in marked receptacles.
To keep their energy and spirits up, members of the Parkway PTA cheered the students on and helped them stay hydrated by handing them cups of water as they ran.

Women’s Lacrosse Helps Out at Ronald McDonald House

November 16, 2016 By Team Up 4 Community

NEW HYDE PARK, N.Y. (Nov. 15, 2016) – Over the weekend, the LIU Post women’s lacrosse team lent a hand at the Ronald McDonald House of Long Island in New Hyde Park.

The Ronald McDonald House of Long Island is a home-away-from-home for the families of children receiving medical care at Cohen Children’s Medical Center.

The Pioneer student-athletes donated $200 worth of food, and cooked breakfast for the families of ill children.

“Having the opportunity to make a difference in someone’s day is such a remarkable feeling,” said LIU Post student-athlete Jenna Doherty. “It was an amazing experience to volunteer at the Ronald McDonald House. Being there made me realize that little things such as simply smiling at someone can brighten their day.”

“The Ronald McDonald was a very rewarding experience,” said Pioneers’ senior Cara Douglas. “I have been to the house in the past, but this time was better than most. We made a brunch for the house and had a great experience in doing so. It is nice to give back to the community in such a special way. My team and I really enjoyed our time at the Ronald McDonald House and we cannot wait to return again.”

Student-Athletes kick off week-long community service event at Delaware Park

November 15, 2016 By Team Up 4 Community

Over 150 Buffalo State student-athletes will head across the street to Delaware Park to help clean up fallen leaves in the park and along Lincoln Parkway throughout this week.

The leaf raking community service event runs Oct. 29 thru Nov. 5 and is the second-straight year that Buffalo State athletics has teamed up with the park for a leaf raking, community event.

This year’s event expanded from just a single-day to a week-long initiative to give maximum help to the park and surrounding areas.

Women’s soccer, men’s soccer and men’s hockey kicked off the event this weekend with the rest of the school’s teams to follow over the course of the week.

Delaware Park is part of the Olmstead Park system that serves over 2.5 million people annually, and sits on 350-acres of land, serving as the “Central Park” of Buffalo. It is located just minutes from Buffalo State’s Elmwood Village campus.

You can learn how and where to volunteer in your local Buffalo community’s Olmsted Park here.
